Welcome! At Signs and Wonders we sift through the World Wide Web looking for evidence of emerging religious futures. Our mission is to provide our readers -- religious futurists, ministers, and just plain spiritual people -- with a guided tour of the web, stopping wherever we see the future of faith unfolding before our eyes. We update this site every three days or so, so come back again and join us on our next trip. If you want to comment on anything you read here or discuss religious futures in general, come over to our forum. |
May 22, 2000 [technological] -- Religion engages science over ethics of stem cell research by Cody Clark at 4:04 PM (EST) ![]() A fascinating analysis of the ethics of stem cell research. The article raises detailed issues which address the technology at the state of the art level. For example: "If the blastocyst is a potential person because its trophechtoderm makes it totipotent, is each interior pluripotent hES cell less of a potential person just because it no longer has access to a trophoblast?" (Don't worry, the terms are explained.) And religious ethicists are admonished to get more involved: "The Vatican's approach is like an ethical spray gun; whereas what we need in this instance is to paint with a fine pencil brush. We need to color within the lines, so that we avoid accidentally blotting out advances in the quality of human health" editor -- This kind of approach is so good to see. Further evidence of the trend toward greater engagement between religion and science. [social] -- Iranian society growing more moderate by Cody Clark at 3:54 PM (EST) ![]() An interesting article on the more progressive aspects of Iranian society. editor - A rare piece of counterevidence in the media against the presumption that the Islamic world is growing more fundamentalist and intolerant. I'd like to see more pieces like this. |
