Signs and Wonders, a Religious Futures Weblog [sources][trends][about][discuss][archive][contact]

Welcome! At Signs and Wonders we sift through the World Wide Web looking for evidence of emerging religious futures.
Our mission is to provide our readers -- religious futurists, ministers, and just plain spiritual people -- with a guided tour of the web,
stopping wherever we see the future of faith unfolding before our eyes.
We update this site every three days or so, so come back again and join us on our next trip. If you want to comment on anything you read here or discuss religious futures in general, come over to our forum.

[social] -- The rise of "Jewish Cool"
by Cody Clark at 7:43 AM (EST)

An article in Tikkun features a cultural trend the author dubs "Jewish Cool". Jewish rap, reggae, and rock music scenes are starting to thrive. Jewish post-baby-boomers have come around to appreciating the arts of their ethnic culture, only in the musical languages of their own generation.

editor -- Two trends supported here -- the acendancy of Judaism and the increasing tendency of (successful) religions to engage, rather than reject, popular culture.

[social] -- More Women Studying Jewish Faith
by Cody Clark at 7:19 AM (EST)

via Harvard's Pluralism Project, a study out of Brandeis University which indicates that involved but non-orthodox Jewish women are studying their faith on average more than men. A spokesman for the Hadassah International Research Institute on Jewish Women, which is releasing the study, stated that, as a result of Jewish feminism, there has been substantial change in attitudes toward females studying traditional texts. For the first time in Jewish history women now have access to the basic tools for Jewish cultural literacy.

editor -- This supports a trend we are tracking of increasing feminisation of faith, especially in the west. Extrapolating from this trend, we might see evidence of an ascendant trend in the practice of Judaism in The U.S. and developed nations.
