Signs and Wonders, a Religious Futures Weblog [sources][trends][about][discuss][archive][contact]

Welcome! At Signs and Wonders we sift through the World Wide Web looking for evidence of emerging religious futures.
Our mission is to provide our readers -- religious futurists, ministers, and just plain spiritual people -- with a guided tour of the web,
stopping wherever we see the future of faith unfolding before our eyes.
We update this site every three days or so, so come back again and join us on our next trip. If you want to comment on anything you read here or discuss religious futures in general, come over to our forum.

[social] -- High profile conversion of Jane Fonda makes news
by Cody Clark at 9:42 AM (EST)

According to the Washtington Times Jane Fonda has become a born-again Christian and her conversion is making waves from Atlanta to Hollywood. She's regularly attending church services and Bible studies in Atlanta. News of her conversion leaped from Internet gossip to mainstream newspapers following the disclosure last week that she and her husband, Ted Turner, have separated.

Friends say Mr. Turner's unhappiness with his wife's enthusiasm for her new faith in Christ contributed to the split-up. The couple said they hope to work out a reconciliation.

Will a reconciliation in the Turner/Fonda marriage make Mr. Turner any softer in his criticism of religion, especially Christianity? Turner is known for his unapologetic jabs at religion. He also controls a great deal of media resources. Speculation has it that it's not inconcievable that he could return to the church himself, which he left when he was much younger.

[technological] -- Will the Internet ruin religion?
by Cody Clark at 9:42 AM (EST)

A series of beliefnet articles on the effect of the Internet on religion.

Several opnions/scenarios are presented, but all agree that the Internet and the ready access to alternative beliefs will erode the traditional authority of mainstream religious leaders and dogmas.

Opinions differ on whether this is a good thing. One question we need more data on: Does Internet time displace face-to-face interaction time or T.V. and video game time?
